The ruling Pakistan Muslim League's intention to be part of "Tahafuz-e-Quran Day" on Friday has alarmed the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA). MMA Deputy Secretary General Liaquat Baloch told newsmen here that the PML leaders and activists' participation might trigger law and order situation on the protest day. "Our protest will be peaceful while the ruling PML is pro-American, blindly believes in its policies, and this can ignite wrath among our activists, leading to law and order situation," Baloch said. He said PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi had contacted MMA leadership, supported the programme and willing to take part in it.
If the rulers are sincere on the issue, they should withdraw support to the US and follow the policies that best suited the country's national interest, he said.
The MMA leader demanded of the US to apologise to the Islamic Ummah for desecration of the Holy Quran, adding that the explanation given by Christina Rocca, who is not a senior official, was not enough.
He said the MMA would hold protest demonstrations across the country, in all the big cities, towns and at district and tehsil levels.
Major rallies would be addressed by central leaders of the MMA, including Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Hafiz Hussain Ahmed. A similar rally would be staged in front of the Parliament House.
Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in Islamabad and elsewhere and this could result in unwanted situations.
Besides, Pakistan, demonstrations would be held in as many as 35 Muslim countries on Friday, while 15 other Islamic nations would be registering their protest on Friday, the MMA leaders said.
After the Friday prayers, people would come out on roads to express their anguish and anger over desecration of the Holy Quran by the US investigators at the Guantanamo Bay. The desecration has sent a wave of wrath across the Muslim world and strongest protests were held in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
About the Muslim countries, he said, the Islamic rulers had become indifferent to the Ummah's problems and had no courage to speak against the US on this gory incident. Likewise, he described the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) as totally ineffective body, desperately in need of restructuring.
He said that all the political and religious parties, including Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) had been invited and they had confirmed their participation in the rallies.
When asked, would MMA participate in the upcoming National Security Council meeting, he said that a meeting of the MMA's Supreme Council had been summoned on May 31 in Lahore to take a decision thereon.
